Dr. Ruslan Dmitriev  recently presented a talk at the Biophysical Society 2020 Annual Meeting, in San Diego Convention Center, California, USA. In his talk, Ruslan summarised recent group developments in a multiparameter imaging of stem cell metabolism in the small intestinal organoid model. He focused on measuring oxygenation of live intestinal organoids, assessing mitochondrial polarisation and combining O2 with NAD(P)H redox microscopy analyses. He also received  Travel Award from the Biophysical Society to attend this meeting. More information on the meeting can be found on Twitter .  The abstract of presentation published in Biophysical Journal supplement can be viewed here .

2019 in review

Image
In year 2019 we achieved the following: - 1 PhD student successfully graduated ( Neil O'Donnell , 2014-2018) - We published 5 research articles on new pH-sensitive ( Analytical Chemistry ), redox-sensitive ( Dyes and Pigments ) and O2 sensing films ( Sensors and Actuators B ), new FLIM method of visualising mitochondrial membrane potential ( Cytometry A ) and a work on tissue engineering ( Xenotransplantation ) - Submitted 1 preprint ( BioRxiv ) on assessing metabolism in the intestinal organoids, together with 2 other articles under consideration, 1 book chapter for the book 'Intestinal stem cells' (Springer, 2020?). - We presented at ISSCR Organoids Amsterdam Symposium (poster), Sechenov Biomedical Summit (Invited talk, organised and chaired a session), ASCB-EMBO 2019 (talk and poster), visited Leica training center and University Tubingen with short-term collaborative visits, lectures and seminars. - 3 funding awards were secured: SFI Industry Fello...

SFI Industry Fellowship award for Dr. Ruslan Dmitriev

Image
Dr. Ruslan Dmitriev has received award from the Science Foundation Ireland supporting his industrial fellowship. This fellowship will support continuation of the previous research project on cellulose biosensor scaffold materials within an industrial setting. This is third grant award from the Science Foundation Ireland for Dr. Dmitriev: in the past he also secured SFI Technical Innovation Development Award (TIDA) and Starting Investigator Research Grant (SIRG). More on cellulose biosensor scaffold materials can be found here . Stay tuned for further news!

IPIC Industry workshop best publication in 2018 award for Dr. Irina Okkelman

Image
Dr. Irina Okkelman's work at the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) / UCC has been acknowledged by the 'Best publication award in 2018' prize. For this contest, Irina submitted our recent work on the design of cellulose-based biosensor scaffolds for imaging of various tissue-engineered constructs ( O'Donnell et al, Acta Biomaterialia, 2018 ).  The award ceremony was held on 21-Mar-2019 in Aula Maxima, University College Cork.

The artwork created by PhD candidate J. Jenkins and Dr. R. Dmitriev was chosen as Cover image for June issue of ACS Sensors journal. This issue features the recent article of the group on new NAD(P)H -sensitive fluorescent dye made in collaboration with Roche Diagnostics GmbH and University of Regensburg, Germany.

V International Symposium "Topical problems of biophotonics-2015" and ASCOS-2015

On 20-24th of July Prof. D. Papkovsky has attended international symposium "Topical problems of biophotonics" (Volga river, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia). He presented a talk about imaging of hypoxia in 3D cultures of stem and cancer cells using phosphorescence-based nanosensors in section devoted to "Tumour and stem cells biology". More information on the event can be found here . Straight after this conference, Prof. D. Papkovsky and PhD candidate C. Kelly have attended the 9th Advanced Study Course on Optical Chemical Sensors (ASCOS) held in Porto, Portugal on 22-29th of July. Prof. D. Papkovsky delivered a talk on intracellular chemical sensing. Congratulations to Caroline, which team won the Project Group Work!

Official Announcement of SFI SIRG Award for Dr. Ruslan Dmitriev

Tuesday 8 th July 2014 – Minister for Research and Innovation, Mr Seán Sherlock, T.D. has today announced €23 million in new funding to help support 40 of Ireland’s most promising young research talent to become fully independent researchers. The funding which is being awarded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) will help ensure that Ireland’s most talented young researchers can be encouraged to remain in Ireland, while also helping to attract excellent young researchers from other countries to base themselves here.  (From SFI website). Dr. Dmitriev has secured funding for Starting Investigator Research Grant entitled "DEVELOPMENT OF BIONIC SENSOR MATERIALS FOR METABOLIC IMAGING IN REGENERATIVE MEDICINE" (~500K, 2014-2018) which will fund him and one supervised PhD student under mentorship of Prof. D. Papkovsky. The project is aiming at development and investigation of properties of advanced self-assembling biopolymer-based phosphorescent molecules for sensing O2, ...
