Our team is growing and we can present at the same time in two different places now! PhD candidate Nore Van Loon (joint project with FunGen lab, Prof. S. Vergult) gave a talk at the Methods and Applications of Fluorescence 2024 conference (8-11 September Valencia, Spain)! She presented her work in progress on using autofluorescence and fluorescent cholera toxin labelling to monitor differentiation of neural cells in human iPSC-derived 'brain' organoids. This work is a part of ongoing efforts of bringing together multi-omics approaches and advanced imaging of organoids to better understand aetiology of such neurodevelopmental disorders as FOXG1 syndrome, funded by the Special Research Fund at Ghent University (BOF) and Marguerite-Marie Delacroix foundation. At the same time, Prof. Ruslan Dmitriev travelled to Munster, Germany, to present an invited lecture on imaging oxygenation and cell metabolism in multicellular spheroids in 4th Inflammation & Imaging symposium! JoVE Methods collection: Quantitative live cell imaging of 3D models

Together with Prof. Margarida Barroso (Albany Medical College), we guest edit a collection of video protocols, hosted by the Journal of Visualised Experiments ( JoVE ), and  dedicated to the quantitative live cell imaging in 3D .  We expect bringing together some leaders and innovators in various aspects of the quantitative live fluorescence microscopies applied to ex vivo animal models, organoids and 3D engineered tissue blocks. The collection, which just has been started, can be assessed here .

Biophysical Society 2020, San Diego

Dr. Ruslan Dmitriev  recently presented a talk at the Biophysical Society 2020 Annual Meeting, in San Diego Convention Center, California, USA. In his talk, Ruslan summarised recent group developments in a multiparameter imaging of stem cell metabolism in the small intestinal organoid model. He focused on measuring oxygenation of live intestinal organoids, assessing mitochondrial polarisation and combining O2 with NAD(P)H redox microscopy analyses. He also received  Travel Award from the Biophysical Society to attend this meeting. ASCB-EMBO '19

Our Team will present at the American Society for Cell Biology / EMBO 2019 Annual Meeting! Dr. R. Dmitriev will give a short talk at the Microsymposium 17 (New perspectives in cell biology, Tuesday) entitled 'Multiplexed FLIM reveals dynamic stem cell niche metabolism in Lgr5-GFP intestinal organoids' and present a poster on the biosensor tissue engineering scaffold materials (P1629, Monday): These presentations will briefly summarise our main research efforts in designing novel imaging tools and their application in study of stem cell niche metabolism in organoids. IPIC Industry workshop best publication in 2018 award for Dr. Irina Okkelman

Dr. Irina Okkelman's work at the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) / UCC has been acknowledged by the 'Best publication award in 2018' prize. For this contest, Irina submitted our recent work on the design of cellulose-based biosensor scaffolds for imaging of various tissue-engineered constructs ( O'Donnell et al, Acta Biomaterialia, 2018 ).  The award ceremony was held on 21-Mar-2019 in Aula Maxima, University College Cork.

Sechenov Biomedical Summit 2019: Moscow, 20-21 May.

Dr. R. Dmitriev organised, chaired and gave an invited talk at the Sechenov Biomedical Summit 2019 conference. His section 'Functional imaging in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine' gathered world-known experts in the areas of intestinal organoid and stem cell niche metabolism, non-invasive imaging in tissue engineering and development of novel fluorescent protein-based biosensors. Dr. Dmitriev's talk was on visualization of stem cell niche by the fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). TERMIS 2018 World Congress (Kyoto, 4-7 Sep 2018)

Dr. Ruslan Dmitriev will co-chair and present at the Symposium 57 (57-SY) 'Multi-parametric quantitative imaging of live cells in 3D tissue models' during TERMIS-2018 World Congress. TERMIS World Congress is one of the major conferences in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, gathering > 1,000 participants (~ 500 oral presentations) from around the world: https://www.termis.org/wc2018/general-information.php Dr. Dmitriev's section will gather some of the renown experts and cover the applications of FLIM, PLIM, fluorescence, Raman, X-Ray Phase contrast, ultrasound microscopy and multi-parametric imaging in tissue engineering. The section will be co-chaired with Prof. Y. Yang (Keele University, UK).

Seminar by Prof. Klaus Suhling: from astronomy and the night vision devices to the intracellular FLIM measurements

Prof. Klaus Suhling (King's College London) gave a seminar at IPIC/ Tyndall/ University College Cork on 12-June-2018 (academic host: Prof. Dmitri Papkovsky). Prof. Suhling is a renown expert in developing FLIM imaging devices and their successful application to study intracellular viscosity, lipids and other biomolecules. Quenched-phosphorescence Detection of Molecular Oxygen: Applications in Life Sciences (book)

Prof. Dmitri Papkovsky and Dr. Ruslan Dmitriev edited the book, which summarises biological applications of quantitative O2 analysis by means of quenched-phosphorescence method. The book provides an excellent introduction to the topic, highlights its main applications, is written by experts and leaders in this research area and should be highly useful to the diverse community of specialists targeting the problems of cell bioenergetics, biomedical imaging, marine biology, photodynamic cancer therapy, food packaging and others. The book consists of 17 chapters (368 pages) and has been published by the Royal Society of Chemistry (series 'Detection Science'). More info can be found here . Sechenov International Biomedical Summit

Dr. R. Dmitriev gave a plenary (invited) talk at the Sechenov International Biomedical Summit (Moscow, Russia, 21-23 May), an emerging scientific symposium focusing on biomaterials, regenerative and personalized medicine. Dr. Dmitriev's talk was on applications of FLIM-PLIM microscopy to study the stem cell niche in the intestinal organoid model.  The conference program can be assessed here . Europt(r)ode XIV, Napoli 2018

Members of the lab will attend the Europt(R)ode conference on 25-28 Mar 2018. They will discuss multi-parametric FLIM-PLIM imaging of 3D tissue models (Dr. R. Dmitriev, regular talk) and biomedical applications of phosphorescent oxygen sensors and probes (Prof. D. Papkovsky, invited talk). Europt(R)ode is one of the leading worldwide conferences focusing on innovations in optical sensors and biosensors and their multi-disciplinary applications.
