Cellulose-based scaffolds for fluorescence lifetime imaging-assisted tissue engineering

Neil O'Donnell , Dr. Irina Okkelman , Prof. Dmitri Papkovsky and Dr. Ruslan Dmitriev in collaboration with colleagues from the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Russia have published new research article on the use of various cellulose-based scaffolds for advanced microscopy in  tissue engineering applications. The team has developed biosensor based on the recombinant fluorescent biosensing protein and fused with cellulose-binding domain: this cellulose-based pH-sensitive biosensor can label the decellularized plant tissue-derived scaffold (spinach, celery) and is useful for monitoring of extracellular acidification of the 3D culture of cancer cells and stem cell-derived intestinal organoids. Such biomaterial is also compatible with multiparametric FLIM-PLIM imaging of real-time oxygenation providing new framework for the label-free biomedical imaging of the tissue engineered in vitro and ex vivo . TERMIS 2018 World Congress (Kyoto, 4-7 Sep 2018)

Dr. Ruslan Dmitriev will co-chair and present at the Symposium 57 (57-SY) 'Multi-parametric quantitative imaging of live cells in 3D tissue models' during TERMIS-2018 World Congress. TERMIS World Congress is one of the major conferences in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, gathering > 1,000 participants (~ 500 oral presentations) from around the world: https://www.termis.org/wc2018/general-information.php Dr. Dmitriev's section will gather some of the renown experts and cover the applications of FLIM, PLIM, fluorescence, Raman, X-Ray Phase contrast, ultrasound microscopy and multi-parametric imaging in tissue engineering. Seminar by Prof. Klaus Suhling: from astronomy and the night vision devices to the intracellular FLIM measurements

Prof. Klaus Suhling (King's College London) gave a seminar at IPIC/ Tyndall/ University College Cork on 12-June-2018 (academic host: Prof. Dmitri Papkovsky). Prof. Suhling is a renown expert in developing FLIM imaging devices and their successful application to study intracellular viscosity, lipids and other biomolecules. Quenched-phosphorescence Detection of Molecular Oxygen: Applications in Life Sciences (book)

Prof. Dmitri Papkovsky and Dr. Ruslan Dmitriev edited the book, which summarises biological applications of quantitative O2 analysis by means of quenched-phosphorescence method. The book provides an excellent introduction to the topic, highlights its main applications, is written by experts and leaders in this research area and should be highly useful to the diverse community of specialists targeting the problems of cell bioenergetics, biomedical imaging, marine biology, photodynamic cancer therapy, food packaging and others. The book consists of 17 chapters (368 pages) and has been published by the Royal Society of Chemistry (series 'Detection Science'). More info can be found here . PhD studentship vacancy in Biophotonics and Biochemistry

We are looking for highly motivated (bio)physicist to join the team as PhD student on the collaborative Project between the Laboratory of Biophysics and Bioanalysis ( Prof. Dmitri Papkovsky ) and SFI-funded Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC, co-supervisor Prof. Stefan Andersson-Engels ). The project aims to develop new type of macro widefield PLIM-FLIM system (based on the existing prototype), optimise the data processing and analysis algorithms and demonstrate it in multi-parametric imaging of oxygenation in cells, tissues and related samples. Ideal candidate must have a good skills in physics, photo-optical instrumentation engineering, software, microscopy and of course be passionate about the emerging FLIM and PLIM methodologies. Sechenov International Biomedical Summit

Dr. R. Dmitriev gave a plenary (invited) talk at the Sechenov International Biomedical Summit (Moscow, Russia, 21-23 May), an emerging scientific symposium focusing on biomaterials, regenerative and personalized medicine. Dr. Dmitriev's talk was on applications of FLIM-PLIM microscopy to study the stem cell niche in the intestinal organoid model.  The conference program can be assessed here .
