Research Vacancy - PhD studentship (position open until 31 Aug 2014)

Project title:

DEVELOPMENT OF BIONIC SENSOR MATERIALS FOR METABOLIC IMAGING IN REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

Description:
The Science Foundation Ireland funded four-year PhD studentship is available from the 01/09/2014 at the Laboratory of Biophysics and Bioanalysis under "Starting Investigator Research Grant" scheme led by Dr. Ruslan I. Dmitriev.
A four-year PhD studentship position is available from 1/09/2014.
The research project is on the development of novel luminescent oxygen and pH sensitive probes based on self-assembling viral nanoparticles. The biosensors produced will be characterised by spectroscopic and biochemical methods, and evaluated in 2D and 3D cell and tissue models by live imaging techniques, particularly Phosphorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (PLIM). The project involves multi-disciplinary approaches, chemical and synthetic biology, spectroscopy, molecular and cell biology, bio-imaging.
Applicants are expected to attain first or upper second class honours BSc or MSc degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular and Cell Biology or related discipline. We are looking for highly motivated, hard-working candidates who are able to work in multi-disciplinary environment, learn new biochemical techniques and participate in team work. Previous experience or background in related techniques, biological models and studies is highly encouraged.
The Laboratory of Biophysics and Bioanalysis is an internationally recognised leader in optical oxygen sensing and imaging, hypoxia research, cell and cancer metabolism and bioanalytical chemistry. The team has strong record of research accomplishments and publications. See: http://publish.ucc.ie/researchprofiles/D003/dpapkovsky.
The successful candidate will be registered and join a structured PhD programme at UCC (for more information click here). He/she will work under supervision of Dr. R.Dmitriev and Prof. D.Papkovsky in the Cavanagh Pharmacy Building on UCC campus.
Stipend. The studentship includes an annual stipend of €18,000 along with the full payment of annual tuition fees for European Union students. Note: the studentship does not cover full tuition for students from outside the EU. There will also be funding for international research visits and attendance at international conferences.

To Apply:
Application should include PDFs of: i) CV with details of undergraduate courses taken and marks obtained; ii) Cover Letter detailing relevant experience, competencies and motivation for applying; iii) names and contact details of two academic references.
Selected  candidates will be notified and invited for an interview in August 2014.
